About us

Kenwa Karate of Sitka teaches a traditional style of karate called Shito-Ryu. We aim to provide Sitkans and visitors with high-quality martial arts instruction. We have been serving youth & families continuously since 1984 when Michael Taylor Sensei founded the dojo as a program under Community Schools.

In 2002 Kenwa Karate of Sitka restructured to become a registered non-profit with the State of Alaska and we obtained federal 501(c)3 designation in 2006.

We now hold our regular classes at the New Archangel Dancers studio. Laurinda Marcello Sensei, one of Taylor’s original students, is our lead instructor. Liam, Chatham, Jade, and Rianna are assistant instructors.

Laurinda Marcello

Sensei

Laurinda Marcello Sensei has been the lead instructor for Kenwa Karate of Sitka since 2013 and holds a 3rd Dan. She started taking karate as a child in Sitka. She later continued her karate education in Juneau where she also served as an assistant instructor. She had the opportunity to travel and train with world-renowned instructor Katsutaka Tanaka Sensei who awarded her first black belt. She believes learning karate should be life-long. She continues to train under her very first instructor, Michael Taylor Sensei, who now resides in Wasilla. Marcello Sensei has also served as a judge for state, regional, and national karate tournaments.

Outside of the dojo Laurinda holds an M.S. in Fisheries. She works as the Bookkeeping Manager for the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association. She enjoys exploring the outdoors around Sitka with her family.
